The on...Actually, it wasn't a publicity stunt. The only reason the information came out was because a fan explicitly asked. Here's the transcript from an open Q&A session at Carnegie Hall. (Book seven spoilers follow)

The question was: Did Dumbledore, who believed in the prevailing power of love, ever fall in love himself?

JKR: My truthful answer to you... I always thought of Dumbledore as gay. [ovation.] ... Dumbledore fell in love with Grindelwald, and that that added to his horror when Grindelwald showed himself to be what he was. To an extent, do we say it excused Dumbledore a little more because falling in love can blind us to an extent? But, he met someone as brilliant as he was, and rather like Bellatrix he was very drawn to this brilliant person, and horribly, terribly let down by him. Yeah, that's how i always saw Dumbledore. In fact, recently I was in a script read through for the sixth film, and they had Dumbledore saying a line to Harry early in the script saying I knew a girl once, whose hair... [laughter]. I had to write a little note in the margin and slide it along to the scriptwriter, "Dumbledore's gay!" [laughter] "If I'd known it would make you so happy, I would have announced it years ago!" I was so disappointed in J.K. Rowling, but I still love the books and the Dumbledore character. She can say what she wants now, but nowhere in any of the books does it mention he's gay, so I'm sticking my head in the sand and saying the FICTIONAL character Dumbledore is not gay!

And Keith, keep reading.Candace Salima (LDS Nora Roberts)http://www.blogger.com/profile/16986635883342034311noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5762056687499352578.post-61787292865231687662007-10-27T10:59:00.000-06:002007-10-27T10:59:00.000-06:00I could not agree more, Keith. I think it was a cheap publicity stunt (like she needed any more publicity?) and she should have just left it alone.Tristi Pinkstonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12122250747480013804noreply@blogger.com
